Using a Gas Supplied Burner to Emulate Condensed Phase Fuels in Microgravity

چکیده
A gas fuel supplied burner; the Burning Rate Emulator (BRE) was used to explore the possibility of flammability of real materials in microgravity by matching heats of combustion and heats of gasification. Different nominal ambient conditions were used to explore their effects on quality of burning including XO2 of 0.21 and 1 bar, XO2 of 0.265 and 0.7 bar, XO2 0.34 and 0.565 bar and, XO2 of 0.4 and 1 bar. The first three were those that NASA considers as human habitat in spacecrafts. The heats of combustion used here were 47.2 kJ for pure ethylene and 23.6 kJ/g for ethylene diluted with nitrogen. Two embedded heat flux sensors were used to measure the surface heat flux. An analytical solution to these flames was used to predict the flame heights and radius at the endpoint of steady flames. Transient behavior of flames upon reaching steady condition, and propagation of instabilities before extinction were observed for flame shapes and measured surface heat flux. Total of 59 flames were studied and steady burning was observed for 29 flames burning in ambient conditions with elevated oxygen while all the flames ignited at normal atmosphere self-extinguished within 40 s. Endpoint predicted values of flame heights, and radius were computed with great accuracy upon comparing with measured counterparts. Arithmetic average of the steady measured surface heat fluxes was used to obtain the heats of gasification, “L”. A flammability diagram as a plot of L vs. burner mass flux was obtained and some common plastics (PMMA, Nylon, PP, PE, and Phenolic glass fiber) were emulated upon matching heats of combustion and heats of gasification with those of real materials.کليدواژه ها
